Original Vachan (Gurmukhi Script):

Ghaal khae kichh hath kamaavae || Taa te vadhhīaa kichhu naam japae ||1||

English Translation:

Earning a living through honest work is good, but chanting the Divine Name is even better. ||1||

Modern-Day Interpretation:

This vachan reminds us that while financial security is important, there's a higher purpose to life.  Working hard and earning a living is commendable, but it shouldn't become our sole focus.

In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the pursuit of material possessions and career success. But the Guru Granth Sahib encourages us to cultivate a deeper meaning in our lives. This "chanting the Divine Name" can be interpreted in different ways:

  • Practicing gratitude: Taking time to appreciate the good things in life, big or small, brings a sense of fulfillment that material possessions cannot provide.

  • Following your passion:  Engaging in activities that bring you joy and purpose, beyond just earning a living, enriches your life and connects you to something bigger than yourself.

  • Helping others:  Giving back to your community through volunteer work or acts of kindness creates a sense of connection and purpose that goes beyond material gain.

Applying this to your life:

  • Take some time each day to reflect on what truly matters to you beyond your job.

  • Explore activities that bring you joy and a sense of fulfillment.

  • Look for ways to contribute to something larger than yourself, be it through volunteering or acts of kindness.

By seeking a balance between material pursuits and a deeper connection to something greater, you can create a more meaningful and fulfilling life, just like the message shared in this verse from the Guru Granth Sahib.
