Original Vachan (Gurmukhi Script):

ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਛਤ੍ਰਿ ॥ ਸਚੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਥਾਪਿਆ ਘਰਿ ॥੧॥

Santokh tan man chhatri || Sach dharam thahapia ghari ||1||

English Translation:

Contentment is the umbrella for the body and mind. Truth and righteousness are established within the home. ||1||

Modern-Day Interpretation:

In this fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the pursuit of more - more possessions, more experiences, more validation. But the Guru Granth Sahib reminds us that true happiness lies in cultivating contentment. When we are content, a sense of peace and security washes over us, like a protective umbrella shielding us from external pressures.

This contentment isn't about complacency or settling. It's about appreciating what we have and finding joy in the simple things. It's about recognizing that true fulfillment comes from within, not from external circumstances.

The verse also highlights the importance of living with integrity (sach) and acting ethically (dharam) in our daily lives. When we live by these principles, we create a harmonious and positive environment, not just within our homes, but also in our interactions with the world around us.

Applying this to your life:

  • Take a moment each day to appreciate the good things in your life, big or small.

  • Practice gratitude by keeping a gratitude journal or simply expressing thankfulness to those around you.

  • Make choices that align with your values and principles.

  • Focus on building meaningful relationships based on trust and respect.

By incorporating these practices, you can cultivate contentment and create a positive and fulfilling life, just like the message shared in this verse from the Guru Granth Sahib.
